Without the railing activities on the balcony are ambiguously restricted because it is not clear how close you can safely get to the edge of the balcony. With a sturdy railing, the safe working space is made clear and expanded.

I like that. I've always thought of like how a tree needs deep roots in order to grow big, but that doesn't always fit well. I like the balcony one.
